Synopsis

An accidental collapse in a forgotten church in Aksum uncovers a chamber sealed fifteen centuries ago. Inside: an Ethiopian codex of the Book of Enoch, an unsent letter addressed to the British Museum, and an 1893 field notebook that has no business existing in that place, in that century.

Archaeologist Gabriel Varela has thirty days before the discovery passes into ecclesiastical custody and is sealed away — perhaps forever. Alongside a conservator who trusts no one, a philologist who can read a dead copyist's mind through his handwriting, and a historian who has spent forty years chasing a man with no name and no face, Gabriel will travel to the places where the tradition of the Devil was born — Jerusalem, Mount Hermon, Istanbul, the Vatican, Sinai — convinced he is reconstructing the origin of Satan.
